Performance testing for powertrains (GMP)
Measure and optimise the performance of your propulsion systems
Why carry out performance testing?
- Determine torque and power curves as a function of speed and load.
- Evaluate the overall efficiency of the powertrain.
- Validate response times, stability and control precision.
- Compare different engine configurations.
- Optimise thermal and energy management strategies.
What types of powertrain are involved?
- Thermal powertrains (ICE-D/G, MHEV, e-fuels, H2, NH3): combustion engine + transmission (gearbox, clutch, etc.).
- Hybrid powertrains (HEV, PHEV): thermal engine + electric motor + electronic management.
- electric powertrains (BEV, FCEV): electric motor, inverter, gearbox, cooling.
Test methodology
1. Installation on dynamic test benches
- Full integration of powertrain on high-power benches.
- Instrumentation of key points: temperature, pressure, torque, speed, consumption.
- Possibility of integrating the cooling system and energy circuit (fuel or electricity).
2. Carrying out the tests
- Static characterization campaigns (measurement at constant load, step-by-step).
- Dynamic tests (load ramp-up, speed variation, cycle simulation).
- Efficiency measurements and full mapping (mechanical, thermal and electrical efficiency).
- Specific performance tests: energy recovery, torque response, gear shifting, etc.
3. Data acquisition and analysis
- Synchronous multi-channel recording (thermal, electrical, mechanical).
- Real-time analysis and advanced post-processing (Concerto, Matlab, Python).
- Provision of engine maps, point clouds, thermal and energy balances.
