Endurance tests for powertrains (GMP)
Validate the long-term reliability and robustness of your powertrains
Why carry out Powertrain endurance tests?
- Check the mechanical, electrical and thermal performance of the powertrain.
- Identify performance degradation over time.
- Detect wear, fatigue or failure of critical components.
- Optimise energy management strategies (engine, battery, hybrids).
- Meet the requirements of manufacturers, equipment suppliers or regulations.
What types of powertrain are involved?
- Thermal powertrains: combustion engines (ICE-D/G, MHEV, e-fuels, H2, NH3), gearboxes, intake/exhaust systems.
- hybrid powertrains: thermal/electric integration (HEV, PHEV), energy management, conversion systems.
- electric powertrains: electric motors (BEV, FCEV), gearboxes, inverters, cooling systems.
Test methodology
1. Implementation on test benches
- Integration on high-power test benches with simulation of customer or standard cycles.
- Motorised load controlled to faithfully reproduce field stresses.
- Controlled temperature and humidity conditions (combined climatic tests possible).
2. Long-term cycling
- Simulation of several hundred or thousands of hours of operation.
- Alternating load phases (acceleration, braking, idling).
- Thermal cycles and repeated starts can be included.
3. Continuous data acquisition
- Real-time monitoring: temperature, torque, power, speed, vibrations, currents, voltages.
- Automatic alarms and shutdowns when faults are detected.
4. Intermediate inspection and post-test appraisal
- Planned shutdowns for partial or complete inspection of the powertrain.
- Dismantling and final inspection with metrological or destructive analyses.
