Fire tests on batteries

ECE R100 Rev.3 compliance and thermal safety assessment

Guarantee the safety and regulatory compliance of your rechargeable energy storage systems (RESS)

The Emitech Group offers comprehensive expertise in conducting fire resistance tests on lithium batteries as part of ECE R100 Rev.3 certification. These tests, described in Annex 9E of the regulation, aim to assess the behaviour of batteries in the event of an external fire and to verify that the storage system provides sufficient time for passenger evacuation.

Our services are aimed at battery manufacturers, approval engineers, quality managers and electric mobility project managers involved in the development of batteries that comply with the most stringent regulatory requirements.

Objectives of ECE R100 fire tests

Battery fire test procedure (Appendix 9E)

Direct exposure

The battery is subjected to direct exposure to fire for 70 seconds (open flame in contact with the battery case)

Indirect exposure

The battery is exposed to indirect exposure for 60 seconds via a refractory brick screen

Post-exposure monitoring

Post-exposure monitoring takes place until complete cooling or for a period of 3 hours

Behaviour monitoring

The system's thermal and mechanical behaviour is monitored during and after the test
