Electrical equipment safety: NRTL certifications
Unlike Europe (CE marking), there is no single government mark for electrical safety in North America. Instead, independent laboratories (called NRTL, recognised by OSHA) certify that a product is safe according to the applicable UL/CSA standards. The product will then bear a safety mark such as UL, CSA or ETL, recognised by the American and Canadian authorities.
This certification is essential for installing equipment in many contexts (commercial buildings, factories) and is highly recommended for all electrical products sold to the general public, as it engages the manufacturer's liability in the event of a safety defect.
