Euro 6 - Euro 7 requirements
Anti-pollution standards for thermal vehicles
Why carry out pollution testing?
Pollution testing is essential to ensure that vehicles comply with European regulations on pollutant emissions. It enables:
- Compliance with Euro 6 standards and anticipation of Euro 7.
- Assessment of pollutant emissions in the laboratory (WLTP) and in real-world conditions (RDE).
- Vehicle approval by the competent authorities.
- Optimise environmental performance and reduce pollutant emissions.
- Verify the durability of emission control systems over the vehicle's lifetime.
What is the European Euro 6 standard?
The Euro 6 standard is a European regulation that came into force in September 2014, aimed at limiting pollutant emissions from new light-duty vehicles (passenger cars and light commercial vehicles). It imposes strict limits for several types of major pollutants:
- Carbon monoxide (CO)
- Hydrocarbons (HC)
- Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
- Particulate matter (PN/PM)
It is divided into several phases (Euro 6b, 6c, 6d-TEMP, 6d) with increasingly stringent requirements, notably with the introduction of real-driving emissions (RDE) testing and the mandatory use of portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS).
Main Euro 6 emission limits (values in g/km)
We will guide you in interpreting and applying the requirements of the standard:
- For vehicles in categories L, M, N, O, T, R, S,
- For Electrical and Electronic Subassemblies (ESA) integrated or connected to the vehicle.
Tests carried out in our ISO 17025-accredited laboratories
| Pollutant | Petrol | Diesel |
| CO | 1,0 | 0,5 |
| HC | 0,1 | - |
| HC + NOx | - | 0,17 |
| NOx | 0,06 | 0,08 |
| Particulate matter (PN) | 6×10^11 | 6×10^11 |
New requirements: RDE and PEMS
Since Euro 6d-TEMP and Euro 6d, vehicles must undergo real driving emissions (RDE) testing, measured using on-board systems (PEMS). These tests are designed to better reflect actual vehicle use and avoid discrepancies between laboratory and road conditions.
- RDE compliance is mandatory for type approval.
- Compliance coefficient reduced to 1.43 for NOx in Euro 6d.
- Defined test conditions (temperature, altitude, load, speed, duration).
