Performance, Development and Airflow Testing for Thermal Engines / ICE
Characterise, optimise and certify your combustion engines with precision
Groupe Emitech brings you recognised expertise and state-of-the-art infrastructure to carry out performance, development and airflow characterisation testing on your thermal engines.
From airflow analysis in our flow benches through to validation on standardised drive cycles, we cover the entire ICE development cycle with a single partner.
Why carry out performance and development tests?
These tests are essential to:
- Characterise internal airflows (Tumble, Swirl) and cylinder head permeability to optimise combustion from the design stage.
- Accurately measure power and torque curves, and validate compliance with standard R85.
- Fine-tune engine settings to optimise efficiency, fuel consumption and emissions.
- Ensure compliance with international environmental and regulatory standards.
- Validate after-treatment systems (catalysts, DPF) and the integrity of critical components.
- Guarantee the reliability and durability of the engine under all operating conditions.
Compatibility with all fuel types
Our equipment enables testing and development of engines running on a wide range of fuels: petrol, diesel, bioethanol, methanol, LPG, CNG, kerosene, ammonia and hydrogen.
Our technical facilities and capabilities
Groupe Emitech is equipped with specialised facilities enabling precise and comprehensive engine development and testing.
Dynamic engine test benches
Our engine test benches support power outputs up to 330 kW and torque up to 3,100 Nm, providing the flexibility to test any type of combustion engine, from light vehicles to heavy-duty applications.
Flow benches and airflow characterisation
Our laboratory is equipped with automated high-precision flow benches for the characterisation of engine components:
- Tumble (vertical swirl) and Swirl (horizontal swirl) measurement to optimise in-cylinder flow dynamics and combustion efficiency.
- Cylinder head permeability: identification of flow restrictions and improvement of volumetric efficiency.
- Catalyst and diesel particulate filter (DPF) permeability: validation of filtration efficiency and after-treatment systems.
- Air mass flow measurement up to 1,300 kg/h.
- Helium leak testing to detect and quantify leaks on critical components.
Fine-tuning and calibration
Our engineers carry out precise optimisation of:
- Injection and ignition systems (petrol, diesel, natural gas, hydrogen, NH₃).
- Torque structure and thermal protection.
- EGR and after-treatment systems (SCR, particulate filters, NOx traps).
- OBD engine control calibration.

Real-world conditions and standardised test protocols
Our benches enable faithful reproduction of real-world operating conditions:
- Internationally recognised homologation cycles: WLTP, FTP75, Artemis, NRSC, NRTC, R85.
- Dynamic temperature regulation of fluids (coolant, oil, charge air).
- Altitude simulation down to 100 mbar to assess performance under extreme conditions.
Detailed and accurate measurements
Every test campaign includes a comprehensive set of measurements:
- Engine torque and power up to 10,000 RPM.
- Fuel consumption via high-precision flow metering.
- Full exhaust gas analysis (CO, CO₂, NOx, HC, fine particles).
- Real-time pressure and temperature readings across the entire engine.
Software tools and parameter monitoring
Our engineers rely on advanced data processing and optimisation tools for:
- Design of Experiments (DOE) for systematic and efficient optimisation.
- Dynamic ignition timing control (knock control).
- Real-time engine parameter monitoring and adjustment.
- Advanced post-processing and in-depth interpretation of results.
